UK Film Council.

Why is digital exhibition important?

Exhibition is important because it helps to sell the film, also it helps to get to more territories. This encourages customers to go and see a film just for the experience, 3D, HD, and big Screen.
The Digital Screen Network is a £12 million scheme, funded by the National Lottery, It has installed 240 screens in 212 cinemas with state of the art digital projection facilities. As a result, cinema-goers will be able to enjoy a far wider range of films at their local cinema and facilities for people with hearing or sight impairments will be greatly expanded.

4). How are UK films regulated?
The British Board of Film Censors was set up in 1912 by the film industry as an independent body to bring a degree of uniformity to the classification of film nationally.
Statutory powers on film remain with the local councils, which may overrule any of the Board's decisions, passing films we reject, banning films we have passed, and even waiving cuts, instituting new ones, or altering categories for films exhibited under their own licensing jurisdiction.

New technologies to target a more specific audience

Text messaging - Orange Wednesdays, targeted at teenagers who regularly visit the cinemas and have used orange Wednesdays in the past.

Video Games – Allow the film to be promoted through a certain game and would encourage the consumer to watch the movie or buy the game after watching the movie.

YouTube - Film promoters would upload trailers onto YouTube to allow everybody to view them, YouTube would also force you to watch a trailer before watching the desired clip.

Social Networking Sites – Films would be promoted at the younger generation who regularly use the sites, they would also be the genre that would appeal to the consumer.

Emails- Films would send you emails on upcoming films, and things that you are interested in.

Working Title and Warp Films/Institution and Audiences

1. Working Title Films is a British film production company, based in London, England. The company was founded by Tim Bevan and Sarah Radclyffe in 1982. It produces feature films and some television productions. Eric Fellner and Bevan are the co-owners of the company now. Warp Films, a sister company of Warp Records, was set up in 1999 with funding from NESTA. It is based in Sheffield, England with a further office in London and has 14 full-time staff. At present there have been four releases on Warp Films: My Wrongs #8245–8249 & 117 by Chris Morris, which won the Best Short Film award at the BAFTA Awards, and Shane Meadows's films Dead Man's Shoes and This Is England. Chris Cunningham, responsible for Aphex Twin's videos Come To Daddy and Windowlicker, is responsible for an abstract short film called Rubber Johnny, which features the music of Aphex Twin and was released on May 23, 2005. Rubber Johnny was originally scheduled to be released two weeks earlier, but was postponed due to the original printing firm objecting to the film's content.
2. The ownership of the company would affect the bugdet of the film, because, the more popular and wealthy the company is, the more money they have to spend on a film or T.V.

Evaluation of Practice

Film

In the practice film, we had to recreate a part of Eastenders we watched in class. The clip was only a minute and a half long. The main aim of the task was to get used to the cameras we were using, to learn the different camera shots, for example- over the shoulder, mid shot, long shot, etc.

The scene we watched was a typical t.v soap because of the way it was set out. It started with characters that were main characters in that episode. It also started in a typical setting the pub, this is typical because the pub features in most of the episodes. We also continue the problem from the episode before, and we instantly get into the story of the episode.

Our recreation was very accurate because we managed to recreate the camera shots well including all the camera shots involved in the clip shown to us. We also got the character rolls done well because we all had a character to recreate and we all managed to get the roll of the character across well.

I think we did well in the camera shots but I think we were not in the correct positions to execute the shots we did so it made the film look below the level of quality. The acting in our film was also not the best which makes the film look bad.

I have learnt that everything in films is there for a reason mise en scene helps get across the message of the scene. Overall mise en scene is one of the most important things within a film.

Lighting in my project wasn't very effective because we used very little lighting in our project, we used some lighting at the start of the film we made but it wasn't very effective at all, due to how bright the light was already in the room we were using for our film.

The importance of continuity is that it makes the film look all joined up and there is no breaks between filming, it makes the film when finished look a good quality film.

I think I need to work on my filming because during the making of the Eastenders film there was a lot of little mistakes made. For example the position of the camera I never go the best out of the camera shots I used because of this. Also I feel that I need to take mise en scene in my films that I make.

Magazine

The magazine cover I used many conventions that are usually used on a magazine. The magazine I annotated contained a large picture of a person, the price, mast head, cover lines, issue number, date, strap line, 3 fonts, 3 colours, and a bar code.

The magazine I used to annotate broke a couple of conventions. It didn't use a slogan, and it didn't use more than one picture

The magazine I used was a hip/hop music magazine, so the colours used were bright and light colours to reflect the type of music it was about.

The cover lines helped attract readers by saying they were interviews of big hip/hop artist inside.

The magazine appeals to both new readers and regular readers because it has a good colours and famous people on the cover, this helps to interest new readers. It also keeps regular readers because it contains a lot of story's that relate to ones before.

I have learnt that when producing a magazine cover you have to consider a lot of things when designing the cover. For example the colour scheme, pictures and the position of them, the cover lines, slogan, the fonts of the mast head etc.

Above the line / Below the line advertising...

MONDAY, 9 NOVEMBER 2009
Above the line / Below the line advertising...
Above the line / Below the line advertising is a marketing stratagy used to promote a film, the method used depends on what the initial budget of the film is. For example, a movie such as spider man may use above the line advertising, ths could be things like posters, trailers and billboards.
On the other hand, below the line marketing might be used by a lower budget film as it is a cheaper method which would still acheive similar effects, for example, the movie 'dead man's shoes' may of used stratagies such as magazines, websites and viral marketing.

MONDAY, 9 NOVEMBER 2009
Stratagies for these three films.
The stratagies used for the film '2012', are trailers, youtube videos, podcasts, Websites, magazines articles.

The stratagies used for the film 'The men who stare at goats' are trailers, youtube videos, podcasts, Websites, magazines articles, merchanising, posters, interviews, press release.

The stratagies used for the film 'Bunny andf the bull' youtube videos, podcates, websites.

American Beauty

American Beauty
In the opening scenes of the film American Beauty, we get introduced to the main character Lester, and we get to know that he is not going to alive in 6 months at the start of the film, this creates a new enigma before the film actually starts. The main character Lester is going through a mid life crisis (another new enigma), this is followed by a number of smaller problems, for example his wife and daughter not having a good relationship with him making him and his house very dull.
Lester is going through a mid life crisis , but his wife on the other hand tries to hide the fact by being very friendly to their neighbours and keeping her and her house very neat, hiding the fact that her daughter and her husband are having problems and are very depressed, which ccreates conflict which refers to Levi-Strauss method.
The narritive structure of this film is that the main character Lester is depressed , this is the equilibrium, we can tell from this that the disequilibrium is not far away.
Levi-Strauss’s theory is well shown in this film with the binary oppositions, with Lester, Carolyn and jane who are all of the same family but do not connect with each other at all. In this film theres is a lot of conflict within the main characters which creates an atmosphere which somehow has to be resolved.
The films music is very clever how different music relates to different parts of the film, so the audience understands what is happening just by the music, for example the music when the main character Lester is dreaming in a fantasy is always the same. The music in the film also sets the mood, so slow dull tones sets the scene as being sad, but an upbeat rythym may be used in a happy scene.
The audience is hooked early on in the film with the home video of Jane talking to somebody filming her,we don’t know who the person filming her is but we can connotate that it is Jane’s boyfriend. Also in this scene , Jane answers yes to the question do you want me to kill your dad, which creates another enigma to the plot of the story.

Preliminary 1 (magazine)

Preliminary 1 (magazine)
In this task we were asked to make our own version of a school magazine, we (my group, Chanan, Jack and me) did a version of a sport magazine, involving P.E mainly.
With the colours of the magazine, we tried to make it look sporty with the grass reminding people of football rugby and other grass sports. The text of the main title is scribbled font to make it look more like school writing and also like a student has done it.
We also got a P.E. teacher on the front cover which will entice the students (regular readers) to read it as they recognise and have a connection with the character on the front cover (Mr Tabz). Also on the cover of the magazine we have a quote from Mr Tabz giving the reader a little insight of what the magazine contains. What we could have included (on the front cover of the magazine) is little pictures. This would give the reader a visual image of what is inside and also, maybe make it more eye-catching with having more colours. We also included a strap-line just to make it look more professional, plus the school emblem of Lutterworth Collage.
I have learnt a lot about producing a front cover of a magazine, all the different layers, texts, font and images. I know how many pictures to do and how many different fonts to use.

Preliminary 2 (film)

Preliminary 2 (film)

In this task I and my group were asked to make a film of our choice. We made an Italian American gagster movie remake. In this task we had to think about different lighting, props and camera angles. When filming we did not have most of the props, but we did have the most important objects.

I and my group tried to use a variety of camera angles, to make it more authentic and more professional. We used many “over the shoulder” shots, because that is a great way of include two or more people in the scene without doing a boring shot of two people. Also I and my group used a few hand held shots, again to make it more authentic and more dramatic.

We did not have any major problems. The main problem that we had with our project was we didn’t have the right props or costumes. The success of our project was that we found the right actors to star in our film and we found them quickly. I think our project was a big success.

Continuity is very important, as it makes the whole scene look more professional, and smooth, I will definitely use this method in my final project.

Lighting is very important in a scene; it sets the mood of the scene straight away before any dialogue. In my preliminary film, we didn’t use the lighting as well as we could have done. Our film was an Italian American gangster movie. Traditionally, these movies usually use a lot of dark scenes to make the scenes more dramatic and tense. In our project we didn’t use the lighting to that effect, so there is something else that we could have improved, but now we know for future projects.

For this preliminary film, we didn’t think about mise en scene as much as we should have done. We should have brought more props to use in the scene. There is another area we could improve on.
